The M7 was a self propelled artillery vehicle with a 105 mm howitzer M2A1. It replaced the T19 105 mm HMC as US army observers saw there was a need for a fully tracked and better armored vehicle. The lower hull and running gear of the M3 medium tank was used to make the vehicle, with a raised open top superstructure added. Into this the 105mm howitzer was mounted with its split carriage. In an attempt to lower the height, the gun elevation was restricted to +35°, which prove to a handicap in mountainous terrain. This was not corrected until the Korean War when a full +65° elevation was obtained. This modification was designated the M7B2. The M7B1 designation was used for the model which utilized the Sherman M4 chassis. The vehicle was first deployed at the battle of El Alamein by the British who received large numbers under Lend Lease. It was called "Priest" by the British because of the pulpit-like structure mounting the 50 cal. AA MG. This vehicle replaced their own SPG design with the nickname Bishop. M7 Priest was the most common vehicle of its type and was used during fighting in western Europe, Italy and in the Pacific, it continued to be used during the Korean war. The M7 was a mobile and reliable vehicle. One negative was its weight and slow speed. A total of 4316 were built. A similar vehicle was the Sexton, these were made in Canada to mount a 25 pounder gun on M3 or M4 medium tanks made in Canada.

There is a Priest Kangaroo variant of this vehicle which has the cannon removed and is instead used as a transport vehicle.
