The Gridley class was commisioned during the latter half of the 1930s. The Gridley class has relatively more torpedoes then other contemporary destroyers but no bofors guns against aircraft. Like the USS Benham (DD-397) it originally only had .50 machine guns which then were replaced with Oerlikon guns during the war. There are three versions of the Gridley, the original configuration and how it would have been in July 1943 and October 1944 respectively.
The first mission for the ship was to protect ships going to and from Pearl Harbor after the attack. Afterwards it went on patrols around the Aleutian Islands.
