The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was an American torpedo bomber. They were often stationed on US aircraft carriers and played an important role in World War II, especially during the battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway. Relatively a few of the 129 produced aircrafts, were still employed in the US Navy Air Force at the time of the Battle of Midway. And of the 41 aircrafts, who were sent against Japanese aircraft carriers in the attack since there were no other available, only six aircrafts return after the torpedo raid. The aircraft was, when it entered service in 1937, the world best torpedo bomber wich can operate from an aircraft carrier. But in early 1942 it was outdated. These torpedo bombers were slow compared with the Japanese Zero's. If they could get on a good altitude, they could launch their torpedoes on a Japanese ship and then quickly turn away. That "quixkly" often went too slow and vulnerable, because the plane gave his entire vulnerable bottom exposed. The Japanese know about this vulnerable part of the aircraft and shots mostly on the bottom. Many American pilots of these aircraft were killed or could bail out. After Midway, the Devastator remained in service with two squadrons, but most other aircrafts are used as a training aircraft and later being replaced by the Grumman TBF "Avenger".
