The history of the Douglas SBD "Dauntless" is closely linked with the history of a whole new weapon system, the aircraft carrier. Although it was later also used on land airfields, they had been designed specifically for use on board of this new type of capital ships. SBD stands for "Scout Bomber Douglas" but by the pilots also jokingly as "Slow But Deadly".
The word Dauntless means fearless, and you will understand, if you flew into battle with a Dauntless. For its time it was a very modern airplane as a cantilever monoplane with all-metal construction. The Dauntless was a dive bomber that could bring its bomb load in a dive with pinpoint accuracy. The achieved speed of dive bombs also gave them the high penetrating power, which was important especially for use against enemy combat ships and fortifications. The Dauntless was also armed with a torpedo for fighting ships which was dropped at low altitude.
In FHSW, the Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless is a dangerous weapon in the hands of a skilled pilot both in the fight against land targets as well as ships. Because of their low speed they should beware of the more agile enemy fighters.
