The Carcano rifle and "carbine" are the main weapons of the Italian armed forces. They differ from most rifles with 6 rather than five rounds in the magazine. The carbine is actually a rifle (fucile), the M38 was historically meant to replace long M91 with a shorter rifle chambered in a more powerful cartridge. There was a carbine (moschetto) variant of the M38 which shortened the barrel even further.

Until 1938, all M91 rifles and carbines were chambered for the rimless 6.5×52mm Modello 1895 cartridge, using a round-nose metal case bullet of 160 grains weight at approximately 2,000-2,400 ft/s muzzle velocity, depending upon barrel length. After the invasion of Ethiopia it was decided to switch to the more powerful 7.35x51 Carcano cartridge. However, the Italian government was unable to successfully mass-produce the new arms in adequate quantities before the onset of war, and in 1940, all rifle and ammunition production reverted to 6.5 mm, the new rifles in 7.35 mm were rechambered but both cartridges would be used throughout the war. In 1941, the Italian military returned to a long-barrelled infantry rifle once again (slightly shorter than the original M91), the Carcano M91/41.

Finland[]

The Finns use the M38 (nicknamed Terni) in the battle of Suomussalmi in FHSW. In reality they finally arrived after the winter war had ended and saw some active service afterwards in further conflict with the USSR.

Netherlands[]

Currently the Dutch have the carcano as their main rifle both in Europe and in Southeast Asia as a substitute, but they did use the carcano in a limited capacity. Captured Carcano rifles and Breda Model 30 machineguns were bought for Dutch troops in the Dutch East Indies from the British during the war. In the FHT mod, a sub-mod for FH 0.7 that introduced the Dutch faction they had M95 rifles which used the same model as the M91 Carcano with the difference that they had a five round magazine capacity. This was left behind when the Dutch faction was ported over into FHSW.

Poland[]

The Carcano is one of the rifles used by the Poles in the Warsaw Uprising. Due to ammo availability it is limited to just three spare clips but it has a one more round in the magazine compared to other bolt-action rifles used in the battle.

Scoped Rifles[]

True sniper versions never existed, but in World War I a few rifles were fitted with French scopes and issued. Ingame the Italians use the Mauser 98K with a scope as their primary sniper rifle. Though there are community made maps with Italian sniper rifles. The scoped variant for the carcano carbine is only available on the Battle of Abyssinia. In the Battle of Nikolayevka the carcano rifle can be found with a scope. The reticle on both guns is the same as the scope on the Mle 1886 Lebel and Lee Enfield No.4 Mk 1. On other maps the Mauser 98K with the full power scope is used by the Italians.

As with most Italian equipment, Carcano rifles were captured by German troops after the Italian surrender on the 9th of September 1943.

The ammo for the rifle and carbine is limited. The carbine can be reloaded four times and the rifle only three before having to resupply. While there is no specific kit with it. They can assigned at random along with other equipment when picking most of the late-war german kits, such as the following:
